Book Returns
Items from any University of Minnesota library location can be returned at the book return slots at both the second floor and basement circulation desks, as well as one just outside the basement library doors and one external book return on the southwest corner at the Pleasant Street side of the building.
Computers
Library Computers
There are forty Dell microcomputers available to the public on the second floor, basement, subbasement, and foundation levels of the Science & Engineering Library, with the majority of terminals on the second floor. The only software on these machines is a Web browser intended to be used for research and course-related activities. An ADCS student computer lab in Room 103 of Walter Library offers machines with software for word processing, spreadsheets, or other computing.Using Your Laptop in Walter
Plug-in and wireless Ethernet access for laptops is available in the Science & Engineering Library and other locations in the Walter Library building. Modem access is available at a designated area in Room 206. Plug-in, wireless, and modem access is available all hours that the Science & Engineering Library is open. A large computer lab is located on the first floor, Room 103, of Walter Library. This facility is available for use by currently registered University of Minnesota students. It has a laser printer and software for word processing, graphics, Web development, and more. Self Service Copiers
There are copiers in Walter on the second floor, basement, and sub-basement. They do not take cash. You must use a U Card, Gopher Gold Card, or a Library Copy Card. Cost is $ 0.17 per copy, or $ 0.15 if the card is purchased with a CUFS account.Printing
- Send your job to the print server from any of the Dell computers in the Library.- Retrieve your print job(s) at either the two laser printers -- Room 206 near the Reference Desk or Basement Level near the Coffee Shop.
- Just insert your U Card, a Copy Card, or a Gopher Gold card . Cost is $ 0.10 per page.
Microfilm and Microfiche
A special printer/reader for these formats is in 206 Walter. Scanned pages can be downloaded to a flash drive or emailed. Printing is $ 0.25 per page.Purchase a Card
"Cash to Card" machines are available on the second floor and in room 103. A blank Gopher Gold card costs $1.00 Library Copy Cards may be purchased with a check or CUFS account at the basement Circulation Desk. Available in denominations of $10 or $40. Use the vending machines on the second floor or room 103 to add money to a U Card or Gopher Gold Card. You can add up to $50 value to the card. An additional machine is available in Smith Hall, Pleasant St. side.Drop-off Scanning Requests
Articles can be scanned and delivered to your desktop. Submit a list, along with a CUFS account, to the Circulation Desk in the Basement or on the second floor. Elevators
The library elevator goes to all four levels of the Science & Engineering Library and can be accessed from the second floor, basement level, sub-basement level, and foundation level. It cannot be accessed from the first floor of the Walter Library Building. To get to the library elevator from the first floor, take the building elevator or stairs to the second floor and access it from there. On the second floor, the library elevator is located near the main entrance to the Learning Resources Center (Room 204).
The building elevator goes to the first floor, second floor, and basement level only and is located near the stairs.
Two elevators near the center of the building serve floors 1 to 5.

Phones
Telephones for on-campus and local calls are located on the second floor, first floor, and basement level, adjacent to the main stairs on the south side of the building. For more information on their locations, see the Science & Engineering Library floorplan.
Restrooms
There are restrooms and drinking fountains on all four levels of the library. On the second floor, they are located in the hallway west of the Great Hall. On the basement, subbasement, and foundation levels, they are located in the Stacks area. For more information on their locations, see the Science & Engineering Library floorplan.

Study Space and Group Study
There are study tables and carrels on all four levels of the Science & Engineering Library, many equipped with electrical outlets and high-speed network jacks.
Three group study rooms, two on the basement level and one in the Reference Room (Room 206) are available on a first-come, first-served basis for small groups engaged in projects. See the Science & Engineering Library floorplan for more information on their location.
Relaxed lounge seating areas are located in the Great Hall on the second floor and in the Stacks Area on the basement level.
There are two small, student study lounges near the Pleasant Street entrance of Walter Library (Rooms 131 and 132).
Vending Machines
There are vending machines on the basement level of Walter Library in the area leading to the tunnel to Johnston Hall. There are additional vending machines in the basement of Johnston Hall. NOTE: No food is permitted in the Science & Engineering Library. Drinks in spill-proof mugs or pop-up sports bottles are permitted at library study tables and carrels. For more information, see the University Libraries' Food and Drink Policy.

Institute of Technology Dean
The primary role of the Science and Engineering Library is to provide library and information services to the students, faculty, and staff of the Institute of Technology (IT), which comprises twelve degree granting departments, two special graduate degree programs, and twenty-two research centers. The Usability Services Lab is the result of a partnership between the Digital Technology Center and the Office of Information Technology.
