Walter Library is located on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota--Twin Cities' Minneapolis campus. The building is on the west side of "the mall," two buildings down from Northrup Auditorium [see map]. The Science & Engineering Library occupies four floors of Walter Library, with the Reference Desk on the Second Floor (624-0224), and the main Circulation/Reserves Desk on the Basement Level (624-3366).

NOTE: Disability Parking is available at the following locations (see the U of M Disability Parking Map):
1) Parking lot behind Smith Hall on the Pleasant Street side, accessible from Pleasant Street (4 disability parking spots)(these spots are not indicated on the U of M Disability Parking Map; however, it was confirmed in June 2002 that they are there).
2) Street parking behind Fraser Hall on East River Road (1 disability parking spot).
3) Street parking west of Wesbrook Hall on Pleasant Street (9 disability parking spots).

Traveling North on I-35W

Take I-35W North to the University of Minnesota Exit (EXIT 17C).
Follow the signs for the East Bank. Proceed across the Washington Avenue Bridge and take the 1st exit on the right (EAST RIVER PARKWAY).
Turn RIGHT at the stop sign and follow East River Road to University Avenue.
Turn RIGHT onto University Avenue. Take University Avenue one-half mile to the intersection of Church Street and 17th Avenue.
Turn RIGHT onto Church Street and go 2 blocks to the Church Street Garage where public parking is available.
From the garage, walk west in front of Northrop Auditorium. Walter Library is on the west side of the mall between Johnston Hall and Smith Hall.

For Persons Needing Disabled Parking And Wheelchair Access:

Take I-35W North to the University of Minnesota Exit (EXIT 17C).

Turn RIGHT at the stop sign and follow the East River Road up the hill to Arlington Street.

Go into Smith Hall and take the tunnel to Walter Library which is right next door.

Traveling South on I-35W

To park in the Church Street Garage (1 block from Walter Library):

Take I-35W South to the 4th Street-University Avenue SE Exit (EXIT 18).
Turn LEFT onto University Avenue at the 2nd stoplight. Take University one-half mile to Church Street.
Turn RIGHT onto Church Street and go 2 blocks to the Church Street Garage where public parking is available.
From the garage, walk west in front of Northrop Auditorium. Walter Library is on the west side of the mall between Johnston Hall and Smith Hall.

For Persons Needing Disabled Parking And Wheelchair Access:

Take I-35W South to the 4th Street-University Avenue SE Exit (EXIT 18).
At the 2nd Stoplight, turn LEFT onto University Avenue and follow it one-half mile to Pleasant Street SE.
Turn RIGHT onto Pleasant and follow it about 3 blocks to Smith Hall which will be on your left.
There are 4 free disabled parking spaces behind Smith Hall.
Go into Smith Hall and take the tunnel to Walter Library which is right next door.

Traveling West on I-94

To park in the 4th Street Ramp or Church Street Garage):

Take I-94 West to the Huron Blvd./University of Minnesota East Bank Exit (EXIT 235B).
The exit will connect with Huron Boulevard SE. Stay on Huron as it curves north/northwest into 4th Street SE.
Continue on 4th Street to 17th Avenue SE. Public parking is available in the 4th Street Ramp.
From the ramp it is about a 10 minute walk to Walter.
If you want to park closer to Walter, turn LEFT onto 17th Avenue and go 3 blocks to the Church Street Garage (1 block from Walter Library). 17th Avenue becomes Church Street as it crosses University Avenue. Public parking is available in the Church Street Garage.
From the garage, walk west in front of Northrop Auditorium. Walter Library is on the west side of the mall between Johnston Hall and Smith Hall.

For Persons Needing Disabled Parking And Wheelchair Access:

Take I-94 to the University of Minnesota Exit (Exit 235B).
Follow the exit to Fulton Street. Continue on Fulton to the East River Road and turn RIGHT.
Follow the East River Road under the Washington Avenue Bridge to Arlington Street.
Turn RIGHT onto Arlington, go 1 block and turn RIGHT onto Pleasant St.
Follow Pleasant about 1 block to Smith Hall which is on the left side of the street.
There are 4 disabled parking spaces behind Smith Hall.
Go into Smith Hall and take the tunnel to Walter Library which is right next door.

Traveling East on I-94

To park in the Church Street Garage (1 block from Walter Library):

Take I-94 East to I-35W.
Take I-35W North to the University Avenue SE Exit (Exit 18).
Turn RIGHT onto University Avenue and follow it one-half mile to Church Street.
Turn RIGHT onto Church Street and go 2 blocks to the Church Street Garage where public parking is available.
From the garage, walk west in front of Northrop Auditorium. Walter Library is on the west side of the mall between Johnston Hall and Smith Hall.

Take University Avenue West to the Minneapolis East Bank campus.
Bear to the RIGHT as University Avenue curves and turns into 4th Street.
Turn LEFT onto 4th Street. Go 3 blocks to 17th Avenue SE.
Public parking is available in the 4th Street Ramp (RIGHT on 17 Ave. SE). From the ramp it is about a 10 minute walk to Walter.
If you want to park closer to Walter, turn LEFT onto 17th Avenue and go 3 blocks to the Church Street Garage. 17th Avenue becomes Church Street as it crosses University Avenue. Public parking is available in the Church Street Garage (1 block from Walter Library).

Turn LEFT onto 4th Street. Go 5 blocks to 15th Avenue SE, Turn LEFT on 15th Avenue SE
15th Avenue SE runs into Pleasant Avenue. Continue for 3 blocks on Pleasant Avenue until Smith Hall which will be on your left.
There are 4 free disabled parking spaces behind Smith Hall.
Go into Smith Hall and take the tunnel to Walter Library which is right next door.

Traveling East on Washington Avenue from the West Bank (or from Downtown Minneapolis)

To park in the Church Street Garage (1 block from Walter Library):

Take Washington Avenue East across the Washington Avenue Bridge.
Cross the river and make an immediate right turn after the river bridge. (EAST RIVER ROAD PARKWAY).
Turn RIGHT at the stop sign or East River Road. Follow East River Road up the hill. Turn RIGHT on Arlington Street.
Turn LEFT on Pleasant Street. Go 2-3 blocks on Pleasant Street.
Turn RIGHT on University Avenue. Turn RIGHT on Church Street.
From the garage, walk west in front of Northrop Auditorium. Walter Library is on the west side of the mall between Johnston Hall and Smith Hall.

To park in the Washington Avenue Ramp (3 blocks from Walter Library):

Take Washington Avenue East across the Washington Avenue Bridge.
Turn LEFT on Harvard Street. Parking Ramp is on corner of Washington and Harvard.
From the ramp, walk west on Washington Avenue. Walk until the Mall. Walk towards Northrop Auditorium. Walter Library will be on your left, between Smith Hall and Johnston Hall.

For persons needing disabled parking:

Take Washington Avenue East across the Washington Avenue Bridge.
Cross the river and make an immediate RIGHT turn after the river bridge. (EAST RIVER ROAD PARKWAY).
Follow East River Road up the hill. Turn RIGHT on Arlington Street.
Turn RIGHT on Pleasant Street. Go 1 block on Pleasant Street to Smith Hall which will be on your left.

Traveling West on Washington Avenue

To park in the Washington Avenue Parking Ramp (3 blocks from Walter Library):

Take Washington Avenue West. Parking Ramp is a RIGHT turn on Washington and Harvard.
From the ramp, walk west on Washington Avenue. Walk until the Mall. Walk towards Northrop Auditorium. Walter Library will be on your left, between Smith Hall and Johnston Hall.

To park in the Church Street Parking Ramp (1 block from Walter Library):

Traveling West on Washington Avenue from St. Paul. Turn RIGHT on Harvard St. SE.
Go 1 block turn RIGHT on Union Street SE
Turn LEFT on Church Street SE to Church Street Garage.
From the garage, walk west in front of Northrop Auditorium. Walter Library is on the west side of the mall between Johnston Hall and Smith Hall.
