Journal Cancellations in 1995/96

The Science & Engineering Library at Sciweb

In the fall of 1995, the Science & Engineering and Mathematics Libraries cancelled a total of 178 journal titles, which constituted 11% of their serials expenditures for 1994/95. This cancellation project was undertaken because inflationary increases for 1996 were anticipated to be particularly bleak: price increases for European journals were projected to average 23%, primarily due to a decrease in the value of the dollar. Prices for U.S. journals were expected to increase 11%, with an overall average projected increase of 14%.

In reality, prices for journals in our collections rose an average of 20% overall, far exceeding the 11% savings realized through cancellations and leaving the collection extremely vulnerable to inflationary increases in 1996/97.

Below is a comprehensive list of titles cancelled in 1995/96. An unusually large number of engineering titles appear on this list because the former engineering librarian, Ray Bohling, who has since retired, cancelled significantly more than any other subject librarian. He did so with the intention that such a large percentage would cover price increases through 1996/97.
